The Common Sense Show

I have come to believe that America is poised to experience food riots. I have further come to believe that these food riots will precede riots which will likely occur when we have a banking holiday imposed on the American people. Congress is complicit with the Obama administration in cutting food stamp benefits for 50 million Americans with virtually no warning. On the surface this is reckless. The government is reducing life-sustaining benefits for a population which is conditioned to not seek out critical solutions to their daily problems.

Learned Helplessness

In 1967, Martin Seligman’s seminal research was published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology entitled, Failure to Escape Traumatic Shock. Seligman’s experiment led to the term often used today to describe why poor people do not take obvious steps to climb out of their poverty-stricken circumstances.

In Seligman’s dog study, he used dogs that were shocked and at first, demonstrated the ability to escape.

In the second phase of the experiment, when a barrier was erected, repeated shocks to the dogs led to them passively accepting the shocks.

In the third phase, when the barriers were removed, one would expect the dogs to return to escaping the shocks. Stunningly, even when the animal could see a clear path to escape, they continued to passively accept the shocks, hence the development of the “learned helplessness”. The dogs had been conditioned that their actions made no difference in the outcome, hence the term, learned helplessness.

Learned Helplessness and the Poor

Learned helplessness explains why so many poor people remain in their circumstances day after day, year after year and generation after generation. After so long, the recipients of Federal welfare programs such as food stamps have learned to become totally dependent on the government for their sustenance and as a result they become conditioned that their actions make no difference to the quality of their lives. Their life decisions become grounded in believing that success is rooted in luck which explains why the poor play the Lottery with far greater frequency than any one economic group.

Learned helplessness is a well chronicled psychological construct. The poor make for vulnerable victims and can easily be manipulated. The following is a humorous account of what learned helplessness looks like.

Learned helplessness, however, is no joking matter and these factors should be taken into account before cutting the welfare benefits of food stamp recipients. Symptoms of learned helplessness also include:

·         Passivity

·         Giving up

·         Procrastination

·         Decreased problem-solving ability

·         Frustration

·         Low self-esteem

The frustration aspect of learned helplessness is very concerning when it comes to the reduction of food stamp entitlements. The frustration element of this condition will put many poor people on the street in a desperate attempt to satisfy their basic needs. This cost reduction move, done in this manner and at this time, is a reckless and dangerous move which seriously and suddenly impacts the poor and the country as a whole.

Learned Helplessness, the Poor and Food Riots

One in six Americans are currently on food stamps. Most of the food stamp recipients are dependent and are in a state of learned helplessness. A whopping $80 billion was spent on the program last year, but now a significant cut will go into effect.

One in six Americans are on food stamps. Most of the food stamp recipients are dependent and are ina  state of learned helplessness. A whopping $80 billion was spent on the program last year, but a significant cut will go into effect.

On November 1, food stamp payments will decrease $36 per month for a family of four. This will prove to catastrophic for many poor families because each food stamp household receives an average of $272 per month.

On the Fox Business channel, anchor Neil Cavuto reported that the $80 million will go towards protecting government buildings from rioting American citizens. Cavuto proclaimed that, “This could be all Hell breaks loose day.” Actually, I believe that the danger date will not be November 1st. The damage being done to the poor needs time to coalesce. However, by mid-November, we will have some definitive answers as to whether this reckless action by the Obama administration will be the cause of widespread rioting and violence. Interesting to note that this event coincides with the timing of the Grid Ex II drill in which a “simulated” take down of the grid will occur beginning on November 13th. This coincidence opens a lot of possibilities.

Cavuto’s guest on the show, TeaParty.net Chief Strategist Niger Innis, said, “This is really frightening. We are on a slow march to becoming Greece. When 50 million people are on food stamps then you have a situation where it’s obvious that what government can give to you, government can take away.” In the long term, people will be better off if they are able to get off food stamps, argued Innis — even if the decrease in funding prompts violence in the short term.

I strongly disagree with Mr. Innis. Many poor people on welfare have been conditioned to be helpless and to demonstrate an external locus of control in which they seemingly cannot see the obvious solutions with regard to their life circumstances. However, even poor people will react to extreme hunger especially when it comes to their children, with vehemence and determination as natural human instincts will take over.

In the first stage of learned helplessness, the dogs do attempt to escape and they do so. The poor are conditioned that welfare is owed to them and if denied some of their “entitlement” they will demonstrate extreme frustration very early on when their full expected benefit is denied. Earlier this month, on October 14, we saw food stamp “riots” at two Louisiana Walmarts when the EBT cards were not working. What will happen when 50 million Americans do not have enough food stamps to sustain them until the end of the month? If individuals rioted after a couple of hours of having their EBT cards malfunction, what will happen when the food shortfall is permanent? The obvious answer is that they should look at improving their skills, getting a job and providing for themselves. However, as we now know, many poor people suffer from learned helplessness.

Options for the Hungry Poor

What will food stamp recipients do when they do not have the resources to meet their basic needs? The answer is simple, they will do what any human being will do when they are hungry, they will take what they need.

When people lash out they generally victimize those who they have access to, their own. However, we could see entire neighborhoods who are hungry and desperate. They will then go to where the food is and we will have the beginning of food riots. This is predictable and the government should be firmly aware of this.

Obviously, the government has planned for this eventuality by spending $80 million dollars to protect government buildings and deploying personnel to prevent looting and damage to Federal buildings. Actually, the first target of a hungry mob will be the grocery and convenience stores. Disturbingly, the government does not seem concerned with protecting the merchant class. They only seem interested in protecting their own. This cavalier attitude which permits the protection of one’s own turf but seemingly ignoring the protection of obvious victims by a hungry mob constitutes depraved indifference to the highest degree.

Is this really just a case of depraved indifference, or is it something more sinister?

Coincidence or Conspiracy?

On October 29th, I chronicled for listeners to the Voice of Russia in stations in New York City and Washington DC as well as in 39 countries how it is becoming increasingly apparent that American institutions such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are moving with great rapidity towards the imposition of martial law through the purchase of 2.2 billion rounds of ammunition and 2700 armored personnel carriers. My article about the interview is chronicled here and the interview can be listened to at this link.

The banking system is on the verge of collapse with a total debt load consisting of (1) $17 trillion dollars; (2) $238 trillion dollars of unfunded liabilities (e.g. Social Security, Medicare); and, (3) a derivatives debt of at least one quadrillion dollars. Please keep in mind that the entire wealth of the planet is placed at $65-75 trillion dollars. In short, there is no way to pay off these debts and the banking system is racing towards default as soon as they cannot pay the interest on these debts. Ultimately, the banks will collapse and the dollar will go down with them. This could trigger widespread civil unrest, perhaps, even a civil war. Shouldn’t the government be preparing? Maybe they are, just not in the way that we would anticipate.

Conclusion

Can there be any question that bank runs and subsequent riots lay in our future? How does the cutting of food stamp entitlements factor into this scenario?

The imposition of martial law is not a simple process in a country with the population and the size of the US. Assets would need to be prepositioned, deployed and ready to act.

Please consider that the cutting of $36 of food stamp benefits cannot be considered a budget reduction matter if some of these people are going to riot. The cost alone of repairing a riot torn area, along with the cost of deploying troops will dwarf any federal savings with regard to these cuts. Therefore, I see the food stamp cuts as an antagonistic move by the Obama administration as a pretext to get troops on the street. Obama has to be aware of these facts. Obama had complete control over this situation as he could have issued an Executive Order to override the Congressional cuts.  And why have not the poor people been warned before now that these cuts were coming? Maybe some of them would have had time to prepare. Regardless, the short window between announcing the cuts and the actual implementation of these cuts was far too short.

If Obama can use food riots as an excuse to deploy troops, the government will be poised to deal with larger civil unrest when the banks fail. Perhaps some will consider these notions that I have set forth as “reaching”, however, when the Obama administration is acting with such reckless disregard towards both the poor and the merchant class that supplies them their food, one is forced to make sense out of the nonsensical.

Another brilliant article Dave, you really hit the nail on the head and tie in the psychological dilemma with regards to our welfare society. We could be very close to the end as the water is almost at a rolling boil and the frogs are ready to eat. Now would be a good time for everyone to prepare physically, mentally, and spiritually. We must now use all of our spiritual weapons to take down these strongholds or delay the inevitable collapse of our once great nation. To deny what Dave so passionately warns about would be suicide.

When I was a kid in WY, a man we knew who lived along the highway had a cattle guard painted on the paved approach to his house which was set back about 50 yards from the road. Cows will not cross this type of barrier, but dogs are different so when this guy got a new Labrador puppy, he would walk it up his driveway every day, then carry the pup back and forth across the “cattle guard.” For many years, whenever you drove by, this dog would charge up the driveway and stop at the edge of the painted barrier and bark his fool head off at passing cars. I felt sorry for him, denied his doggy right to chase cars, but he did live to a great old age, saved from getting hit on the road.

Hadn’t thought about that man and his dog in years….

Thank you Dave for another great article.

Many of your feature articles lately have been discussing the USA and World economy, with a lot of figures getting talked about. I just wanted to clarify of couple of things. GWP (gross world product), according to a number of sources is 85 trillion dollars (2012) dollars. Total assets for the USA is roughly 180 trillion dollars. Total assets for the entire world is 750 trillion dollars. I don’t know how these numbers are figured. Common sense would tell me that the figure is the net profit and loss figure (assets minus liabilities). When one considers that anywhere between 50-90% (depending on the source) of the world’s assets are owned by roughly 3500 people, it puts a much less fatalistic light on the world’s current financial mess. Debt forgiveness would hurt only the super rich. Debt forgiveness would IMMEDIATELY bring back the middle class and put most people back to work because the rich would need to get their money producing machine going full tilt right away. MOST of the world’s wealth has been produced by the USA in the past 100 years. I’ve seen figures of 300 – 500 trillion dollars being the amount that the Federal Reserve has STOLEN from the American people since 1913. If the masses were aware of how badly they have been taken advantage of by the satanic bankers, there would be immediate rioting in the streets.

Debt forgiveness is the ONLY solution and the rich know it.

God has a different plan and we need to be ready for that.

“But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government and to provide new Guards for their future Security.
    (Declaration of Independence)

What Obama is doing is not “reckless”. He has reckoned. His handlers have reckoned. They have a plan to starve us and wreck us and to get us to killing each other.

The obvious cure is for each family to take up some form of production to sustain itself.

The “Learned Helplessness” is by design. I have no idea how to break past that. Such people may be like the two stuck on the escalator, and just sit on the curb and starve to death. Some may start asking people for money. Some may bust into people’s houses, kill them and eat all the groceries — and then sit there in comfort while they starve to death.

Many millions have no idea at all about work or production. The parents were given an allowance when they were children, and graduated to the Big Allowance of Welfare when they became of age.

Many who are able to do so will take in a single woman with children and try to teach them to do something productive, with mixed results.

Obama has fixed the economy so that hardly anyone can just go out and get an entry-level position and start earning wages.

The Learned Helpless will hardly go door-to-door with a bucket and a squeegee offering to wash windows in exchange for a sandwich.

We cannot carry them on a silken cushion. “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread . . .” Genesis 3:19

The Ten Commandments tell us TWICE, “Thou shalt not covet anything that is thy neighbor’s.” God knew what He was talking about when he told us not to covet. Now we have only a slim chance to recover from all this covetousness.

You disagree that in the LONG TERM people are better off NOT being on food stamps? Surely that’s a typo. What’s the other option? Why not put the entire nation on food stamps then? We cannot afford an entire nation of helpless parasites who are not actually helpless.

Aside from food stamps note that social security recipients are going to receive a 1.5% increase this year and received 1.7% last year. Anybody who buys food or pays a utility bill knows that this is ludicrous. Inflation is much higher than that.

Shalom to all you judges out there.. what do you base your opinions on.. Most of you have never spent even one day amongst the poor in this nation and that includes the so called Christian right. You get all your news from second hand sources.. and maybe the few hours you might volunteer among the poor and homless, to ease your concience or to look good.. and get pats on the back for your kindness… Yeshua told us that we would always have the poor with us.. what is it about that comment that is difficult to understand.. He went even further by saying that pure and undefiled religion is to help the widow and the orphan. The early church took care of the poor,, YES, IMAGINE THAT.the church, they did not expect Rome to take care of the poor and the beggar,as the Messiah who lived in them, compelled them to love the less fortunate.. The only reason most even give the poor a second thought is the same reason why ADAM BLAMED HIS WIFE.. the need of a scapegoat is always convenient when ones skirts have been pulled up and one is naked and exposed..Yahweh is judging this harlot christian right church and soon judgment will roll down to the unsaved,THAT IS WHY THIS NATION IS FALLING APART AND THAT IS WHY THERE ARE NO JOBS.. THE CORPORATE BEAST HAS SENT ALL OF OUR INDUSTRY TO THIRD WORLD NATIONS WHERE PEOPLE WORK IN SWEAT SHOPS FOR PENNIES A DAY.. DONT GET IT TWISTED.. REPENT BEFORE THE DOOR TO THE ARK SHUTS.. AMERICA AS YOU ONCE KNEW IT IS GONE.. and why does that bother so many of you????? IF YOU REALLY BELIEVE THE WORD OF THE LORD YOU WOULD BE VEXED BY ALL THE EVIL, AND WOULD BE CRYING OUT FOR YOUR LORD TO COME,, not trying to stay here and fix what is sick sick sick.. THE LORD COMMANDS ALL MEN EVERYWHERE TO REPENT, FOR THE KINGDOM OF YHWH WILL SOON CRUSH ALL EARTHLY GOVERNMENTS AND HIS KINGDOM WILL COME..

In response to those who are focused on self-sufficiency via production, most in E /SE have been unable to grow a garden. Huge amts of rain and sky cover, geo-engineering – surely one of their favorite toys, have prevented plants from flourishing. Small green tomatoes hung on vines for weeks. Other veg varieties were decimated by insects and molds. Winter garden, planted 2x, barely peaks out of soil – no Sun!! Don’t believe this is coincidence. Even squirrels should be advised, we have no acorns! Please reference latest Paul Craig Roberts article, “Wake Up or Be Destroyed” http://paulcraigroberts.org/2013/10/28/pcr-column-wake-destroyed/

  21. Dave
While I thoroughly agree with your dire conclusions about where the U.S. is headed, including a bank holiday, food riots, and a bloody and brutal government response, beginning with martial law, I’m in fundamental disagreement with several of your assumptions about how and why this will all come about.

Re your proposition that the poor don’t “lift themselves” out of poverty because they’re victims of “learned helplessness:” do you, then, believe members of the middle class don’t “lift themselves” into the upper class due to the same “learned helplessness?”

    I don’t!

I submit all of us, whether poor, middle class or wealthy, are inherently conservative, in that we begin to understand and identify with the parameters of our personal socio-economic reality from the time we are born. That personal reality is home for us, and we reflexively internalize the self-image, the understanding of other classes and of the world, which most readily enables us to remain comfortably at home.

Individuals who don’t behave that way opt out at considerable cost. The poor child who starts taking books home from school and engaging in serious study will quickly lose his friends. So, too, the child of a suburban middle class family who aspires to enter the elite reality of fine wines, fine art, opera and rolex watches will find himself very lonely.

With rare exceptions, it never occurs to us to climb out of our class niche. A young man born in Watt’s, Los Angeles with the drive and energy of a John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan or Henry Ford doesn’t class-climb. He becomes a successful drug lord, his money and status protected by all the members of his organized band—Bloods, Krips or Pirus if he’s black, Asian Boyz or Wah Ching if he’s Asian, Surenos, Azusa 13 or the 38th Street Gang if he’s Mexican—his gang using the same tactics that the FBI, CIA, MI5 and MI6 employ to protect the interests of major U.S. and British corporations at home and abroad.

In short, people seldom “climb out” of their birth-assigned class. When they leave, it’s almost always because they were shoved.

As Old Karl Marx argued, and self-proclaimed Marxists immediately/pragmatically forgot, the fundamental aim of all political activity is protection of the actor’s personal social existence. With nothing to protect, unless they are paid or pushed, the poor of every nation usually don’t vote; and when they do vote, they have scant understanding of their chosen candidates’ positions. Having new or recent vintage cars and partially paid for homes to secure, members of the middle class talk politics with their friends and neighbors, join petitions, put signs on their lawns, and vote. While members of the upper class who have vast wealth to defend live and breathe politics, donate huge sums of money to candidates who will best guard their interests or run for office themselves, simultaneously condescending the thoughts and practices of those below them in the middle and lower classes.

Is it not obvious that whether we are Leftists, Rightists or Liberals, with rare exception, none of us is found to call true ideas which, if we act upon them as valid, will injure our own social existence, i.e., cut our throats? Is it not obvious that the rare exceptions, a Christ or Che Guevara, are immediately vilified by everyone whose interests are thereby threatened? And is it not equally obvious that less menaced people who find the reasoning of a Christ or Che appealing, but who would suffer economic diminishment if they acted upon it NOW, idolize their chosen hero instead of acting upon his preachments, and, that when people idolize, they do not emulate?

Marx argued that whether nomadic slave, feudal or capitalist, when a system of production and distribution reaches a stage at which it’s no longer able to maintain the social existence of a large section of the community, prompting members of that sub-community to organize and carry out a revolution, because people seek, acquire and employ political power only to defend their personal interests, if some members of the revolutionary sub-community possess more wealth than the others, upon toppling the established order they become the new political elite and resist moving any further in the direction of equality for the simple reason that doing so would entail their own expropriation. In that regard, witness the anti-feudal, state-capitalist Russian and Chinese revolutions carried out in poor Karl’s name.

Focusing on our own present reality, I consider it self-evident that the economic pies which Americans, French, Greeks, Spanish. Portuguese, etc. have to share have shrunken dramatically over the past decade. As a consequence, from the wealthiest to the poorest, all the citizens of those countries are now fighting to maintain their respective social existences. Having so much more to protect, the wealthy have sought, gained and are presently using the overweening political power required for them to succeed, which necessitates driving millions of middle class Americans, French, et. al. into poverty, and tens-of-millions of the poor into dust.

You propose, and I agree, that this process will very soon lead to defensive uprisings by the poor, prompting a violent oppression (and, I believe, slaughter), carried out by elite banking, military-industrial and other corporate interests.

There’s much for those of us who intend to stand agains the indicated tide to discuss. But we will need to start with a clear material understanding of where that tide is momentarily moving and why.

EDITOR’S NOTE: AS MARTIN SELIGMAN, THE AUTHOR OF THE STUDIES ON LEARNED HELPLESSNESS, HAS POINTED OUT, THERE IS A FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF CHRONICALLY POOR PEOPLE AND THE MIDDLE CLASS. YOUR INACCURATELY ATTRIBUTING THE CONCEPT TO THE MIDDLE CLASS WHEN IT DOES NOT FIT. THE REASONS FOR THE HELPLESSNESS OF THE POOR ARE VARIED. LEARNED HELPLESSNESS IS A PRIME CONTRIBUTOR BUT NOT SINGLE, STAND ALONE VARIABLE.

I FUNDAMENTALLY AGREE WITH MANY OF YOUR ASSERTIONS (E.G. THE POOR DON’T VOTE) AND I WOULD ADD THAT MOST OF THE MIDDLE CLASS IS IGNORANT. I, LIKE YOU, LOOK FOR SOME VERY DARK RETALIATIONS FROM THE POWER ELITE IN RESPONSE TO THE DEFENSIVE PUSH BACK BY THE POOR.

  22. Raider October 30, 2013 at 1:03 pm

I think it’s also the majority of Americans who have been conditioned into learned helplessness, and not just the food stamp receiving poor.

I say this because the federal government and many leaders of large corporations and banks have been and are openly going against the constitution in grievous ways and yet the top traitors and tyrants among these groups are still breathing and walking around.

Trying to wake people up to the depth of corruption around us is an important activity, however it has its limits. After awhile, it becomes apparent that many people don’t want to wake up no matter what evidence is put before their faces. As far as the people who are awake, unless effective actions are taken to combat and stop tyranny, then there’s not much difference between them and those who remain in denial. The biggest reason why there is not much difference is because both are still captive to the continuing actions of the tyrants in charge.

There’s only one action that effectively deals with tyrants and it is death to tyrants. When the tyrant leaders in America begin dropping dead in their tracks because of citizen’s bullets, then and only then does tyranny begin to end. There’s not much time left though, to take care of this kind of business, because I believe many of us sense and see that tyranny in America is about to get much darker very soon. To the point that many of us will not be able to fight back effectively, even if we wanted to.

I would have to HIGHLY DISAGREE with you Dave for calling the 1 in 6 on Food Stamps are in a ‘state of learned helplessness’ that is SO WRONG and VERY JUDGEMENTAL as their is MANY on Food Stamps with NO FAULT of their own such as the Retired or Working Class.. Military and the Disabled.. like me

EDITOR’S NOTE: YOUR HAVE CHANGED THE CONTEXT OF THE STATEMENT. SOME PEOPLE HAVE UNFORTUNATE LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES. THE DISABLED WERE NOT BEING REFERENCED. THE REFERENCE WAS TO ABLE BODIED POOR PEOPLE WHO COULD BETTER BUT DO NOT FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL REASONS. AND I WILL ALSO ADD THAT THERE ARE SOME ON PARTIAL DISABILITY WHO HAVE TROUBLE, BUT COULD ALSO DO MORE TO IMPROVE THEIR SITUATION. MUCH HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT THE LEARNED HELPLESSNESS OF THE POOR, AS A GROUP. IT IS AN ISSUE AND THE FREQUENCY OF THE CONDITION IS GROWING AS CIRCUMSTANCES WORSEN IN OUR COUNTRY.

I DO NOT KNOW THE NATURE OF YOUR DISABILITY, BUT I WISH YOU GOOD FORTUNE IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

the situation is a tad more complex than “laziness” if you do the research

Humanity is the product of an already flawed Species, God aside……. Being an Introduced Species,… the Only Answer to the Humans INABILITY to form a Lasting, Honest, Benevolent Society is Their Complete and Total Destruction…..

Otherwise…… This fallacy that We all currently KNOW and “Love”…. Will Continue, for as Long as this World can support Life….. (Which is not for much longer as We reckon “Time”) As Human History shows, the “Names And Faces” change.. but the “Game” remains the Same……

And The VERY LAST thing that needs to happen is the Human Infestation reaching into Deep Space to spread Untold Horror to any Life Form that cannot defend itself against such an Incursion……….

The game has already been played and the Elites won. It has been over for well over a decade now. I know this will piss a lot of people off. The Elites have all the money, influence, government, military and just about any other center of power you would like to talk about. I know we all need to be prepared and able to do what we need to do. What they don’t have is a belief in the TRUE almighty GOD and his son Jesus Christ. Revelations is not something that you or I will be able to stop or change. What you MUST do is accept Jesus as your Lord, Romans 10:9-10 “Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” Pray to EXPOSE their evil deeds and PRAY that more people wake up. Romans 12:19 “Dearly beloved, AVENGE not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, VENGANCE is mine; I will REPAY, saith the Lord”. This is one of the hardest things I had to learn as a Christian. I still struggle with this after reading all the bad stuff going on.

op9 and Karen, Why all the venom? You both make assumptions about the writer and posters here you have no business making. The fact that your posts even appear here speaks volumes of the intent and heart of Mr. Hodges.

I believe Mr. Hodges would do anything he could for someone in need. The Apostle Paul tells us that there are many parts to the body of Christ (1 Cor 12:12-27). One part may directly minister to the physical and spiritual needs of the poor, another may be called to be the body’s watchman. If the body of Christ consisted of all hands and no eyes, Mr. Hodges would not be warning the sick Church and world of the coming dangers. I believe Mr. Hodges knows that there is little hope of changing anything, but that we must try, and as well sound the alarm so people may draw closer to Christ and spiritually and physically prepare.

    Dave,
I have to say I am a wee bit discouraged by the class war retoric. The poor aren’t so different than the middle class as even we the educated and informed stand by while our sick government arms everyone from mexican drug lords to “syrian rebels”. We stand by while our government steals our money and gives it to foreign bankers and countries for that matter when we have all those in need right here in the USA. I do not condone the welfare state either but what is the option for most of these people at this point? I cannot bash on the people as ignorant and lazy as they may be for not having the oppurtunity to become independent. Lets see here. A single mom with 3 kids can get her housing, food and clothing paid for and still be there for her kids or like my mom with 6 kids she can work double shifts at the hospital, sleep 21 hours a week and never save a dime let alone see her kids. I understand my mother made a decent wage as an rn but what kind of jobs are out there now for an average go getter let alone college grad? Welfare is slim pickens compared to foreign aid, bank and corporate bailouts, and endless war and deceit by our apostate unrepresentative government. As a Christian I say stop the war and feed the poor. As a society we can do a lot better than this 40 hour a week indentured servitude. Who the hell needs it anyway? Your enemy isnt the poor or welfare state. Your enemy is the zionists that control our war machine and our money.

EDITOR’S NOTE: YOU ARE TAKING POETIC LICENSE WITH WHAT I WROTE- I AM NOT DECLARING WAR ON THE POOR. HOWEVER, THE CLASS DISTINCTIONS AS TO WORLD VIEW AND PSYCHOLOGY ARE ACCURATE AND HAVE BEEN KNOWN, THROUGH RESEARCH, FOR A VERY LONG TIME.

Why the parasite poor should just march down to the nearest car plant, steel or carpet mill, new home construction site etc etc and get em one of those great paying jobs. Car plants paid 30+ bucks an hour 30 years ago, it must be killer money now! Or maybe go back to school and load up on advanced mathmatics and crippling student loan debt so they can operate, repair, program and produce high quality aircraft parts on a CNC machine for 12 bucks an hour, like that guy on 60 Min’s wanted his workers to do. But get your training somewhere else, he doesn’t have time to train.

  36. NoSale October 31, 2013 at 6:16 am

I think the linked article above: Paul Craig Roberts is correct. There isn’t any jobs available that get one anything above what the Gov has been giving them. Why would you work 8-10 hours a day, when you could have the same sitting on your sofa? There are no decent paying jobs, & without Tarrifs they are NOT coming back. TEOTWAWKI is upon us!

How is this Obama’s Hunger Games when the Republicans pushed these food stamp cuts through? Clear thinking and action needs to be fact and reality based. Your article is based on neither.

  40. William Blight October 31, 2013 at 8:43 am

Also by the way, while cutting food stamps, the Republicans were busy arranging government welfare for the big agricultural corporations. Someone should start stating real facts rather than engaging in idiotic Obama-bashing.

    Dave,

For the most part, I think it’s a sound, well-written, well-thought article. Thank you!

A quibble, though, when you write:

“what will happen when the food shortfall is permanent? The obvious answer is that they should look at improving their skills, getting a job and providing for themselves. However, as we now know, many poor people suffer from learned helplessness.”

It’s not only “learned helplessness” that precludes the poor from “improving their skills, getting a job and providing for themselves,” but the imposed, continuing, and increasing barriers to doing such that our society has erected in recent decades! The off-shoring of jobs, the inflation-adjusted decrease in the minimum wage, and declining access to, and standards of, education have all made the “job” of being poor more entrapping, more dispiriting.

In coming months and years, I think we are very likely to see food riots and other kinds of riots against a system that has systematically deprived the people–poor, middle-class, and seemingly affluent–of their “consent” to be governed, by weakening their educational access and standards, and through mis-information and dis-information, and, of course, through a money-corrupted politics and culture.

  43. Big Dan October 31, 2013 at 9:40 am

$80 billion on food stamps and TRILLIONS on war adn TRILLIONS on banksters. They’re giving $400billion to the Pentagon for an “upgrade” it says in the news today, just for an upgrade.

  44. Mister Jimmy October 31, 2013 at 10:51 am

I don’t see it that way. If they can’t buy food now, where do they get the money to buy expensive weapons and ammo sufficient to riot? People on food stamps are not organized for resistance, either. They will lay back and take it. What will really happen is crime will go up radically. When their food gets cut, they will hit the streets and begin attacking people (whitey, mostly,) and get food through committing crimes.

  45. Don Uber October 31, 2013 at 10:56 am

I thought people would be cheering that those who choose to be poor and unemployed, the majority being white and from the South(factually the largest recipient of welfare, the lowest payer in taxes, the least educated and most obese population in the entire USA), would now NOT get the silver spoon of a hundred dollars a month to eat. I’d point out that all of this “free” money is immediately spent back into the economy helping grocery stores and the South’s Tiffany’s (Wal-Mart) stay in business. As for food riots they will be predominately in the South so LET IT BE. Let there be Martial Law also. Perhaps the rest of the USA can finally rid themselves from that cancerous tumor of moochers against welfare that festers below the Mason-Dixon Line.

Pubic arraignment in criminal cases has been abolished in the united states.
The U.S.A is a police state where only police make criminal accusations.
A traitor class of liars (lawyers) thieves(bankers) and murderers(soldiers) rules over the groveling cowering slaves (christians) who wait for the sweet release of death. RELIGION is how people are made into SLAVES.
YOU LIE when you say there are easy means of over coming this “poverty”.
We don’t suffer from learned helplessness here in the U.S.A. .
We are brutally oppressed by gangs of armed thugs called the local sheriff who deprive us of our basic rights as citizens. We are deprived of courts of COMMON LAW and a public treasury.
You are a liar that serves liars thieves and murderers.

In fact you attack the poor as unworthy of food and shelter.
TO PROVIDE FOR THE COMMON WELFARE is the job of government.
Invading other peoples countries and murdering them is not
defending our nation. I know the numbers you lying turd.
I know what war costs and what welfare costs you lying turd.

“The obvious answer is that they should look at improving their skills, getting a job and providing for themselves”
Uh…get a job WHERE? Part time minimum wage? Exactly how is that gonna buy enough food for yourself let alone a family?
Improve their skills? Exactly how are they supposed to afford that? Go into debt with a student loan and screw themselves even worse than they are now hoping that they can find a job in the area they even studied when they graduate?
Some of it I agree is learned helplessness but most if it is cold hard reality…there are NO opportunites that are certain in this country unless you are rich. Period.

jeez, never ceases to amaze how many people believe in/depend on god/jehovah/yeshua, a.k.a. the ‘invisible man in the sky’. i imagine it was many moons ago, when people looked up into the night sky and contemplated the incomprehensible vastness of it all that, in order to prevent their head from exploding, that man first created god.

  53. Churchill October 31, 2013 at 4:42 pm

The Classes are chained together as, our Economy and the bulk of the American Society is reliant on Government in many various forms regardless of income.. Eventually, we may very well witness a chain-reaction event as a prelude to enslavement, possibly ushering in massive labor, business and military relocation projects all in the name of ‘Defense of the COG’. We were at first a Constitutional Republic in which eventually, then did sell it’s Sovereignty (Constitutional Financial, Export/Import and Economic obligations) to the highest bidders in exchange for a Democracy. Thus, allowing our Declaration of Independence to be meaningless, Our US Constitution to be buried under amended amendements and executive orders resulting in a ‘Lost Republic’ de-void of any Free Man, Women or Child. Democracy is a mere prelude to Anarchy which is shortly followed by Authoritarian Absolutism.

  56. MDD November 1, 2013 at 12:54 am

One third of the food stamp recipients are likely the children of illegal aliens, and their families are already way ahead of where they would be in their home countries. They will not riot at all. They’ll just raid the food banks instead. The other vast majority of the food stamp recipients are all Obombass voters/supporters, and they won’t riot either, since they worship their idol in a huge way. Thus martial law isn’t coming as a result of any riots from food stamp cuts.

America as a nation needs national repentance but each person can turn to Christ now without waiting for the entire nation. God can take care of all Americans. If what is published here is true, then I advice that problems sometimes have a way of making people turn to God our maker. Many times when people have all they need, they tend to forget their maker. One American who only gave her name as ”Peace Pilgrim” advised that ”The way to peace is to overcome evil with good, to overcome hatred with love and to overcome falsehood with truth.” I do not object to people preparing for the rainy day, but such preparation without making peace with God may fail. I ask all people to repent of their sins and accept Jesus as the Christ for the forgivennes of their sins. God can bring refreshment

  58. Randall Tillotson November 1, 2013 at 8:51 am

This was in today’s news (Friday, November 1). There are actually two punches as in the old “one-two.” Unemployment benefit extensions are ceasing on Jan. 1, 2014, which will effect a large segment of the country.

    http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2013/11/01/Food-stamp-cuts-affect-1-in-7-Americans/UPI-91301383287400/

    This is a telling quote.

[The so-called food stamp cliff, affecting nearly 48 million people, or 1 in 7 Americans, “may be more of a sidewalk curb,” JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief U.S. Economist Michael Feroli told The New York Times in an email.

“The bigger cliff, which I’m surprised people aren’t talking about, is emergency unemployment benefits Jan. 1,” he said.

The Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, financed by the federal government for states that met certain unemployment and state benefit thresholds, was part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 — commonly referred to as the Recovery Act, or the stimulus.

It was a temporary increase in the maximum amount of food stamp benefits people could get monthly as part of Washington’s response to the Great Recession.

The EUC program extended unemployment benefits to jobless workers beyond the normal maximum of 26 weeks up to 99 weeks at first and later to 73 weeks.

The maximum returns to 26 weeks Jan. 1.]

And let’s not forget the statement by Joe Biden with unindited criminal Jon Corzine next to him in this 2010 campaign speech on the possibililty of a “bank holiday,” meaning the banks close for an unknown amount of time.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-cLZai63GA

Look into what happened in Argentina in December of 2001. They had a bank holiday that allowed the bankers to steal all the account holder’s dollars, essentially destoying the middle class. This event was likely a dry run to see what kind of response the state and bankers would get. As history showed down there, the Argentine goverment passed new banking laws at the last minute that allowed this theft to occur, meaning it was legal, but only in a technical sense. Remember that the Nazis broke no laws, since they simply wrote laws to make their crimes legal.

  59. […] I’m not alone in forecasting riots and martial law in our near future. While I’m opposed to the massive welfare system that’s developed in my lifetime, it is extreme irresponsibility for Obama and Congress  to unexpectedly cut back on a program on which almost 50 million Americans have come to rely. This program is the only reason we don’t have Depression-era food lines in the streets. This could be Obama’s own Hunger Games as a prelude to martial law. […]

  60. Dave November 1, 2013 at 4:31 pm

The writer & many of those commenting are over-thinking what’s going on.
There is no efficient system being implemented to take us down, it’s only the result of 50 years of democrats in congress crafting new laws that coerce money from the productive to the parasitic for their votes.
The left has won & I would be shocked if anyone other than a democrat was elected to national office again.
Those receiving cash transfers now outnumber the productive.
This won’t end well, but at least those most affected will be the parasitic class.
I’m no republican since they have been hijacked with the “Israel must thrive” fairy tale written in their stupid religious books.
I’m just a Libertarian atheist who sees who’s doing what to whom.
    We’re toast.
A word of advice; The best way to protect you from slavery & genocide is access to drinking water, stored food, a military pattern rifle & few thousand rounds of ammo.
