Let’s not forget that the individual mandate, the backbone of the (un)Affordable Care Act was a republican idea back in the 90’s. It doesn’t matter who authored the legislation because the black robed idiots on the supreme court upheld it as “constitutional”. As someone who spent 25 years in healthcare software I long ago concluded that government – democrats and republicans – have been seeking to control the delivery of healthcare. I’m no fan of Obama, not in the slightest, but his policies are simply a continuation of Bush and his predecessors. Medicare Part D, the drug program pushed by and passed under George Bush is already underfunded by $22.1 Trillion! And it is a relatively new program. Healthcare is broken and is going to get a lot worse. The next step is single payer, Medicare for all. Medicare is presently underfunded by $88 Trillion so it’s likely that adding tens of million of people will break the system irreparably.

I went to my mother-in-laws house for Thanksgiving (she is a liberal) I tried to tell her what was really happening in this country, I asked her why she voted for Obama and she said, he is good looking. I don’t think Obamacare was ever actually written in it’s entirety. I believe it is a “blank check” for progressives to implement whatever new rules they want whenever they want to do it, then simply state that these actions are part of the affordable care act. This is why they could not read the bill before it was voted on, because much of it did not yet exist on paper. It is still being made up as they go.

Identifying Robert Creamer as the author of Obama Care, you described his community organization as “Marxist/Communist” and labeled his wife, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky “a Marxist.”

Unfortunately, endorsing those propositions requires tossing out the long-established dictionary definition of socialism used by Marx and his contemporaries, enemies as well as allies.

Webster’s defines socialism as:

“ownership and operation of the means of production and distribution by society or the community rather than by private individuals, with all members of society or the community sharing in the work and the produce”. 

Now, the indisputable material truth is that the Obama administration hasn’t taken any steps in the direction of ownership and operation of the means of production and distribution “by society or the community,” but rather, by the government in the name of the community. Moreover, as tens-of-millions of overworked, underpaid and unemployed or underemployed workers (nearly 50 million of them on food stamps), and, the multi-million dollar bonuses paid to Wall Street executives testify, Americans are light years away from “sharing in the produce”.  Indeed, they’re moving in the other direction.

Contending government financing and control of an economy is state-capitalist, not socialist, Marx explained capitalism’s evolution as follows:

During the early period of capitalist production factories were small and manufacturers were able to obtain sufficient money (which Marx called “surplus value”), from workers to build and repair their plants and machines.  But, as the number of capitalist producers increased, so, too, did the aggressiveness of their competition. 

In time, Marx noted, it became impossible for capitalists to extract sufficient surplus value from workers to construct the large factories and install the costly equipment that competing required.  It became necessary for them to obtain the requisite funds by selling stocks and bonds; which Marx described as “seeds of socialism,” since it meant capitalists were relinquishing a modicum of control over their corporations.  Eventually, he continued, with more and more nations having to become capitalist to survive, factories becoming ever-larger, machines ever more sophisticated and costly, even the sale of stocks and bonds could no longer provide adequate funding. It became imperative to glean surplus value from everyone, and that could only be accomplished through the state.

However, bringing in the state didn’t make a capitalist productive-distributive system any less capitalistic Marx reasoned, since the benefits of production still accrued mainly to a financial-industrial elite, (e.g., the billions of dollars in salaries and bonuses currently being provided bankers, major bond/stock holders and Wall St. executives). State-capitalism, he argued, was simply the advanced stage of capitalism’s evolution, a point his colleague Friedrich Engels emphasized in “Socialism: Utopian and Scientific,” writing:  

“[T]he transformation, either into joint-stock companies and trusts, or into state ownership, does not do away with the capitalistic nature of the productive forces.  In the joint-stock companies and trusts this is obvious.  And the modern state, again, is only the organization that bourgeois society takes on in order to support the external conditions of the capitalist mode of production against the encroachments as well of the workers as of individual capitalists. The modern state, no matter what its form, is essentially a capitalist machine, the state of the capitalists, the ideal personification of the total national capital. The more it proceeds to the taking over of productive forces, the more does it actually become the national capitalist, the more citizens does it exploit. The workers remain wage-workers-proletarians. The capitalist relation is not done away with. . . . State ownership of the productive forces is not the solution of the conflict, but concealed within it are the technical conditions that form the elements of that solution.”   

Following Russia’s anti-feudal revolution, Vladimir Lenin argued that in order to industrialize the Soviet Union would need the expertise of its businessmen, engineers, metallurgists, chemists, biologists and other professionals, all of whom enjoyed a socio-economic status far above that of the average Soviet citizen.  Many of those professionals had already gone into exile in Western Europe or the United States, he observed, and if the hegemonic existence of the ones who remained was not protected they, too, would leave, making industrialization impossible, and the country’s complete socio-economic-political collapse a certainty.  Therefore, Lenin insisted, for the present, the U.S.S.R. would have to build a capitalist structure.

Moreover, Lenin reasoned, because England, France and the U.S. had no serious competitors when they established capitalist systems, they were able to start with small manufacturing firms and gradually proceed to ones which were large.  The U.S.S.R., on the other hand, was going to undertake industrialization in a world already dominated by huge corporations which operated internationally. To compete in that world would require starting with companies of grand scale, and that would necessitate tapping the energies of everyone via the state, precisely as Japan and Germany had done.  In short, Lenin concluded, the Soviet Union would have to focus on becoming “state capitalist.”  Responding to anarchists who demanded the immediate establishment of socialist equality, in a speech given in June 1921, Lenin exhorted:

“The alternative (and this is the last ‘possible’ and the only sensible policy) is not to try to prohibit or put the lock on the development of capitalism, but to try to direct it into the channels of ‘state capitalism.’ This is economically possible, for state capitalism—in one form or another, to some degree or other—exists wherever the elements of free trade and capitalism in general exist.  Can the Soviet state, the dictatorship of the proletariat, be combined, united with state capitalism?  Are they compatible?  Of course they are.  This is exactly what I argued in May 1918.  I hope I proved it in May 1918.  Nor is that all.  I then proved that state capitalism is a step forward compared with the small proprietor (both small-patriarchal and petty-bourgeois) element.  Those who juxtapose or compare state capitalism only with socialism commit a host of mistakes, for in the present political and economic circumstances it is essential to compare state capitalism with petty-bourgeois production.”

Returning to Marx, he was very clear about what HE meant by socialism and communism. Under socialism everyone was going to receive the same wage, enabling each working person to obtain an equal share of the nation’s production of goods and services, Marx’s infamous: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his work.”  Following the failure of the Paris Commune in 1871 Marx modified this prediction slightly. For a brief period he suggested, the highest paid in a socialist society might receive twice the income of the lowest.

In his “Critique of the Gotha Program” Marx reasoned that even if everyone was paid the same wage under socialism, a modest degree of inequality would continue to exist, saying:

“…one man is superior to another physically or mentally; one worker is married, another not; one has more children and so on. Thus with an equal output and an equal share in wages, one /person/ will, in fact, receive more than another.”

Although Marx considered the inequality described inevitable, he believed it was a problem that would resolve itself. As the socialist order of production and distribution matured it would become communist, wherein the operative principle would be: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.”

When viewed through Marx’s paradigm, then, the people who argue for government financing, or the nationalization of big banks and corporations are, in effect, recommending that the U.S. should become more thoroughly state capitalist; a point frequently made by Gerald Celente, the noted publisher of the Trends Journal.

According to Marx’s paradigm, when a capitalist economy in economic crisis begins to rely more and more on state financing, one must ask the question: “Is capitalism approaching its final stage?”; the stage at which Marx predicted capitalists would no longer be performing creative, job producing, community serving functions, but, through their control of banks and major industries financed by the people, would merely be bleeding off the nation’s wealth. 

There are certainly precedents for the governments of capitalist countries in deep crisis maintaining that productive-distributive system by financing banks and corporations and offering employment and income assurances to a majority of workers. At the same time, via a redefinition of socialism, they called, and apparently believed, that their government financing was socialist. 

The National Socialism of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Socialism of the U.S.S.R. under Stalin were both products of the Great Depression, and, the redefinitions of socialism which both countries embraced were created by members of the German and Soviet upper-middle classes, then, enthusiastically backed by the two countries elites, who, finding their personal social statuses increasingly threatened, formulated capitalism-sustaining programs financed by the state which enabled them, along with millions of others to hang on; excluding, of course, the millions who were slaughtered or enslaved to keep their state-capitalist systems going.

Granted, leaders of Germany and the Soviet Union commonly believed their self-definitions. But does that mean you/we should do so as well?

During The Inquisition Spain tortured Jews and atheists on the rack, and France tore tens-of-thousands of Protestant Huguenots apart using horses, slow-burning others at the stake. The leaders of both countries loudly declared themselves Christians, regarding their actions as critical for promoting that faith. Do you personally think they were? Or do you judge them not by what they said or believed but by what they did? If the latter, by what mysterious logic have you determined Obama, Creamer, et al. are socialists?

After dealing with the American public for years on a one to one basis as passengers in my taxi, I can honestly say America deserves Obamacare. And the police state that is rapidly building. Over the last several generations in the country, the people’s attitude has gone from an attitude of “My God will provide all my needs according to His riches in Heaven” to an attitude of “My government will provide all my needs according to the riches in the other guy’s pockets.” Americans have long wanted a society of a free lunch paid for by the other guy. Well, now they are getting it imposed upon them. Americans have long wanted to be the tough guy on the block, and impose military might on the whole wide world, and now that chicken is coming home to roost. The government you empowered to go after Afghan sheep herders (or druggies or commies) is now going after you. Poor you! The government you wanted to “tax the rich” to subsidize your mortgage, and your student loans, and your GI Bill is now taxing you to fund someone else’s health care. Poor you!
If a person wishes to avoid the bad consequences of these disastrous social decisions, he has only two choices: Evade the consequences (and hope to remain free) or leave the country. As for repealing it or changing it–not going to happen. The American people hove sown the wind. They are about to reap the whirlwind.

Gee – I wonder what type of health insurance Robert Creamer and the Congresswoman enjoy? I have been a RN for 25 years and have seen it all. I could tell there was little to no input from healthcare professionals in the creation of Obama Care. So I became curious and started nosing around the internet. All I can say is I am not surprised. Every single nurse, doctor, therapist, surgeon etc., I know is just waiting for the implosion. There is nothing in this legislation that makes medical sense, insurance sense or quality of care sense. Mr. Creamer and wife surely do not have Medicaid or an HMO and have never lived in the shoes of the “American People”, yet seem to know how and where we should obtain our medical care. I have been working for a large national medical insurance company for the last 10 years or so in the medical quality area and combined with 25 years as a nurse, I am qualified to say this is not going to work. But before it implodes, a lot of people are going to suffer, a lot of people will be stuck in limbo without coverage who have cancer or heart failure and no care, a lot of people will die because of the poor planning and rushed implementation of a badly designed program. We, the medical community, are just waiting to pick up all the horrific fallout. It is going to be worse than any of you realize.
